I need a bigger desk...!

Hello you sad, sad individual. You could have gone to any other page in the Archipelago. But no. You just had to come and see if I've got a better PC than you. Well, I bought mine in September 1996 and added one thing mid-December 1997 - a Righteous 3D card. For the technically minded, that's a Voodoo chipset onboard supporting Direct3d and 3dfx. Please note, installing such a card with a S968 chip on your 2D card can seriously damage your sanity. It'll also damage your normally sky high 2D resolution too, but hey... I've also swapped out my struggling 6 speed CD-ROM for a 24 speeder. Vroom vroom. In April 1999 I made what will almost certainly be the final upgrades to my original system, a new 4MB Virge based 2D card and an extra 16 MB of EDO RAM - my next upgrade will be a whole new system, finance permitting. Anyway, as I've gone to the trouble of putting a whole separate page together for this, I might as well get on with it I suppose.

  • Brand: Not Applicable (a store built it on my instructions)
  • Processor: Pentium 166, no smegging Ms and definitely no blinkin' X
  • Motherboard: HX, with 512kb pipeline burst cache
  • Memory: 48 Megabytes (handy)
  • HDD: 2.4GB Quantum (Fireball?)
  • Graphics Cards: 4MB Virge 2D (with some 3D enhancements), backed up by an Orchid Righteous 3D card with 4MB.
  • Sound Card: Sound Blaster 32
  • CD ROM: 24 speed Creative
  • Modem: Motorola Voicesurfer 56k (V90) External
  • Scanner: Primax Colour Hand Scanner
  • Backup device: External Parallel Zip Drive
  • Printer: Canon BJ-200ex
  • Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 15GLi (yum!)
  • OS: Windows 95. Every machine has its downside, OK?!
  • Main software suite: Lotus Smartsuite not-quite-but-very-nearly 95
  • Paint package: Registered version of Paint Shop Pro 4

And assorted games, speakers, joystick, mouse, and so on. I have to say I think it's aged pretty well; 3D card is vital in the equation. I traded in my Amiga 1200 for this baby, so opted for the Pentium rather than the Cyrix as the match was less equal in 1996. All told, less than £2000 (UK pounds), and now probably about a quarter of that, I suppose. So, there you are.
