Introduction

In a recent e-mail to me, someone wrote that they thought this site was well on the way to becoming a very good nostalgia resource. In revising these pages at the start of 2001 I can see what prompted the comment. Although only this section of the site addresses nostalgia explicitly the whole tone of the Archipelago is quite retrospective - possibly because that was a phase I was going through at the time when I first put it together. As more and more old TV series pop up on video, it's becoming clear that at the start of the new millennium I'm not the only one clinging onto the previous one!

My generation, perhaps more than others before it, has been heavily influenced by a whole range of clever marketing schemes designed to part us from our pocket money and generally warp our fragile little minds. In a twisted way you have to admire the sheer scope of the merchandising that came along with The Phantom Menace for example, and the quality of games and the Net has added yet more marketing power for such things - witness the Pokemon sensation.

Free market cynicism aside, the fact remains that toys, TV shows and the like do form a part of the modern psyche for many people, and this section of my site goes a little way to remind you of some of those childhood interests through my own recollections. The rather large Star Fleet section of this site has now got its own site; this was a TV series which lodged itself into my consciousness at an early stage and has stayed with me, and many others, ever since. I also recommend a visit to the Links section for sites which cover just about every other classic kids TV series going. Let the nostalgia trip begin!
